Crop Data --> Soil and/or tissue analysis --> Source Water -->  Fertilizers --> Fertigation / nutrient solution

The Target Values represent the nutrient requirements of the crop. All further calculations will refer to the target values determined and for the specified time period.

1. Select your crop or enter nutrient Target Values

As a first step, Load Crop from the system's database or enter target values manually.

Loading crop nutrient requirements

  • Click the Load Crop button. The Crop Selection window opens.
  • Select a combination of Crop, Variety, Growing Method, Yield Goal and Growth Stage / Recommendation.
  • Click Select.
  • The nutrient Target Values will appear in the Target Values row.

Once you loaded crop data, you can still modify the target values manually, add or edit values.

Note: The information available in the software is not always complete and it is the user's responsibility to verify the target values.

Entering Nutrient Target Values Manually

  • From the Select Units drop-down menu, select the Target Values units.
  • Each of the macro nutrients (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, and S) has a drop-down menu. Open the drop-down menu to select the form of each nutrient (e.g. P or P2O5, N-NO3 or NO3).
  • In the Target Values row, enter your required target values for each of the nutrients.

For nitrogen, you can enter either a value for total nitrogen or for each of  the nitrogen forms individually.

A blank cell versus a value of zero

Note that leaving a cell blank defers from entering a value of zero. A blank cell will give Smart! the flexibility to calculate any value for that nutrient that could result in a higher accuracy for the other target values. On the other hand, entering a zero in a target value cell forces the calculation to avoid adding that nutrient.

Where to continue from here?

After defining the nutrient requirements, you can either continue to Source Water screen or, if you have soil test results and/or a tissue analysis, you can adjust the nutrient requirements based on the test results.

Other features in this screen

Application Frequency - The period that refers to the target values entered.

For example, entering a target value of 73 kg/ha and an application frequency of 365 days means a requirement of 73 kg/ha/year.

A target value of 0.2 kg/ha at an application frequency of 1 day means 0.2 kg/ha/day.

Split/Multiple Target Values - Various options that enable you to split or multiply current target values.

Target Values EC (ds/m) - Appears when Target Values represent concentrations in water. Clicking the Calculate button next to the Target Values EC field will calculate the estimated Electrical Conductivity of the nutrient solution, based on the target values entered.

This can give you an estimate of the nutrient solution EC, before you selected fertilizers.

Crop Information - Information on the crop and target values. Modifying this information does not change anything in Target Values or further calculations.
